3-D Flowers!

Look what the 2nd grade made for Mother’s Day! They worked very hard to create these beautiful 3-dimensional flowers. They definitely brighten up the halls. Special thanks to one of my 2nd grade student who brought in all of the peanut butter jars used for vases.

Valentine’s Day Art

Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade created “heart art” to help decorate the halls for Valentine’s day. Kindergarten was working on their overlapping skills to create a heart collage.Ā 1st grade bent toilet paper rolls to make uniqueĀ heart shape stamps, and 2nd gradeĀ mixed different tints and shades of red showing their knowledge of value. Whoo!

2nd Grade Cardinals

This is one of my favorite projects. The original post can be found here.Ā 2nd Grade Cardinals

Look how this year’s 2nd graders did!

2nd Grade Perspective Snowmen

Once again, 2nd grade is learning about differentĀ points of view. We talked about what it looks like to look at a snowman from our point of view, from an ant’s point of view, and from an airplane flying over top.Ā We called this viewpoint “bird’s eye view.” They layered different sized Ā circles, used oil pastel to add some value to the edge of each snowball, and then added eyes, arms, and a nose. Ā Like always, I am thrilled with how these turned out.

1st Grade Polar Bears

1st grade just finished up their project on cool colors. We learned that green, blue, and purple are the cool colors. To create our bears, we first used powdered tempera paint, and saran wrap to create an icy effect. Then we tore white paper, glued it on top, and then created our bears. For the bears, we used black paper, white chalk, and charcoal. Once they were drawn, they cut them out and glued them down. These bears are fabulous. I especially like the facial expressions, and ones wearing makeup.

2nd Grade Birch Trees

This is by far my favorite project. The students learn how to create a tape resist, cool colors, and about abstract art (the snowflakes). We talk about how shapes can act as symbols representing different things. These are beautiful.

Georgia O’Keeffe Landscapes

Georgia O’Keeffe is a new artist of study this year for my 2nd grade kids. From what I could tell, they thoroughly enjoyed her work. We discussed how she is a local artists (She is from Sun Prarie, Wisconsin) and we also analyzed her work. We narrowed her paintings down to three different themes: skulls, flowers, and landscapes. We focused on landscapes for this project. Some of the key vocabulary words for this lesson are:

  • Overlapping
  • Impasto or “In-Pasta” as they called it (It means the thick application of paint)
  • Landscape
  • Value (specifically with the blue of the water and sky, as well as the browns of the mountains)
  • Warm Colors (specifically in our trees)
  • Foreground, middle ground, background

All that aside, my 2nd grade kids rocks and like always they impressed with these awesome landscapes.

2nd Grade Owls

2nd grade just finished up learning about owls, and creating 2-D owls. They used sharpie, tempera paint, and construction paper for these beauts. Next on the agenda, 3-D clay owls.

Oh, and we watched theseĀ videos, the kids highly enjoyed them.
